ChatGPT 5 in 2024?

OpenAI is preparing for the release of ChatGPT 5, and it is possible that we may have the version available as early as 2024. Since the beginning of the year, we have seen some articles discussing the launch of this version; however, what we saw was the release of version 4.0 on May 13, 2024.

The released version 4.0, which comes from Omni, is currently the fastest and most intelligent. It was updated to allow interaction with the tool, and the best part is that it's no longer exclusive to the paid version. The free version now gives us access to the Omni version, and we can even talk to it. The difference with the paid version is that it offers a feature called Live Omnidirectional Vision. This feature is gradually being rolled out to iPhone users, where it is useful for visual recognition and interactions with physical environments. The paid version also includes a desktop app, though it's currently only available for Mac notebooks. It's worth noting that the paid version also offers Assistants, which can be trained for specific tasks.

Another update in both the paid and free versions that Omni brought is that ChatGPT is now a multimodal tool, where you not only receive text-based responses but can generate much more, like images, videos, audio, and so on. However, it's important to highlight that ChatGPT is a text-based language model, so when you're asking it to create an image, for example, it uses DALL-E for that but delivers it directly within its interface.

The current base of version 4.0 is dated October 2023; however, the tool has the ability to search the web for answers to queries, a feature also available in the free version.

ChatGPT 5: The Evolution

At a recent event, OpenAI presented the image above, comparing its current versions with the highly anticipated version 5.0. In the image, we have a Great White Shark (Version 3.0), the Orca Whale (Version 4.0), and then a Blue Whale, the largest whale species in the world, comparing it with Version 5.0.

Now imagine, if they themselves made this comparison regarding their versions, and today we already have the "gigantic" Version 4.0, just think about what it will be like when ChatGPT 5.0 is released. What we know, and what has been promised, is that we will have an update to ChatGPT later this year, 2024, but we cannot say for sure that it will be Version 5.0.

OpenAI continues to be steadfast in the pursuit of the second level of AI, which is AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). In 2015, when OpenAI was founded, its goal was to advance humanity to the next level of AI. What we have observed is a significant advancement in AI research and the technology we have today. Moreover, everything they develop is "shared" with the entire community. This is why we see many AI tools based on the GPT model.

As for the next level of AI? I believe there is still a long way to go, as we need to advance significantly in technology to support this level.

What to expect from the new version of ChatGPT?

While studying and searching for information, I found a report featuring Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, where she states that "things are changing" and that ChatGPT 5 will be a PhD in specific tasks. Will we stop referring to ChatGPT as an intern?

She also adds that Version 5 is expected to be released at least a year from now (the report was from June 2024), but we might be surprised soon by OpenAI itself. However, let’s wait and see. They promise a new revolution on the platform with the potential to turn the world upside down once again.
